Training Requirements for BreathScan®

Read this set of instructions completely before you begin a training session. Follow each step in order--do not skip any steps.

The BreathScan® Breath Alcohol Detector is an easy to administer, accurate and dependable tool for determining the presence of alcohol in an individual. Like any tool, one should know how to use it properly to obtain maximum benefits from its use. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that the following training be completed by anyone who will be administering the BreathScan ® to another person with the intention of determining the presence of alcohol.

  1. Distribute to each person one set of "Instructions For Administering BreathScan® Test" and three sample BreathScan ® testers along with any other applicable materials.
  2. Step by Step, read through the BreathScan ® administering instructions, Numbers 1 through 4, covering
    each point completely.
  3. Have each person inspect each tester to insure that the ampoule has not been broken and that the crystals are yellow in color. The intensity of the yellow color will depend upon the tester "level" being used. A 0.02 tester is very light yellow while a 0.10 is a much deeper yellow.
  4. Pair up each person being trained with a partner (If training one person the trainer will act as the partner.)
Again, Step by Step, demonstrate the use of the tester and how to identify the faint sound of the air passing through the tester. Have each person perform the test, using one of the testers which you have given them. Squeeze middle of outer plastic tube between thumb and forefinger to break inner ampoule--squeeze only once, DO NOT CRUSH or bend tube, and blow hard for 12 seconds.
  5. As each person is blowing into their tester, have them verify the test is being performed properly by listening to the air passing through both their tester and their partner's tester.
  6. Have each person compare the used tester with an unused tester, so that they can see that the crystals are still yellow in color--some of the luster is gone, but the color is still yellow.
  7. Using a mouthwash containing 26.9% alcohol or higher (i.e., Scope or Listerine), and plastic cups containing a small amount of mouthwash to each person. Instruct each person to swish the mouthwash in their mouth. They may spit the mouthwash out into the cup if they desire. Following the instructions in 4, above, again, have each person blow into an unused tester immediately after rinsing their mouth out with alcohol. Shake tester to distribute crystals evenly in viewing window. Lay tester flat on a flat surface, and wait 2 minutes. The yellow crystal color will disappear when the alcohol level is at or above .02. The .02 testers' initial color is very light yellow. The .02 will become white or ash at an alcohol level of .02 or
greater. What the administrator is looking for is this color change. For best interpretation compare crystal colors to those of an unused tester.
  8. Each trainee should have blown through two testers one without alcohol first on their breath and one with alcohol (mouthwash) on their breath. The administrator should have each trainee demonstrate that they can successfully "read" the tester and correctly interpret the result.
