TobacAlert Instructions
PLEASE READ THE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY BEFORE USE
What are the uses of
TobacAlert™?
TobacAlert™ allows you
to assess your level of exposure to second-hand smoke. It is not intended for
medical use.
TobacAlert™ measures
cotinine in urine for the purpose of determining if you have been exposed to
environmental tobacco smoke (second hand smoke) produced by cigarettes, pipes,
cigars, etc. Within the past 2 to 3 days. The cutoff concentration for the TobacAlert™
test is 6 ng/mL. Smokers and users of tobacco products will also test positive.
Before
You Begin
- Carefully read through
the entire pamphlet.
- Do not use after the
expiration date printed on the foil pouch.
- Do not open the foil
pouch until you are ready to do the test.
- Have a watch, clock or
timer available.
- Have a clean,
leak-proof container available to collect your urine.
Instructions
- Collect urine using
any clean container available.
- Tear the foil pouch at
the notch and remove the strip.
- Holding the blue end
(handle end) of the strip, dip the strip in the urine sample container for
10 to 20 seconds. Dip the strip in the sample up to the level of the arrows
on the strip.
- Then put the strip on
the reading card in the space provided for at least 20 minutes before
reading the result. Do not place the strip anywhere else. Flush the urine
collected and wash or discard the container.
- Read the results at
least 20 minutes after dipping. The reading is the LOWEST reddish line on
the strip. Compare your strip with the examples shown on the reading card.
Find the example that most closely matches your strip. If your result is
"0" (negative), then you have not been exposed to second hand
smoke within the past 48 hours. If your result is "1", then you
have significant second hand smoke exposure. If there are no clear reddish
lines on the strip, repeat the test from the beginning with a new strip. If
the result is unclear to you and you think it could be either "0"
or "1" and you cannot decide, repeat the test at another time.
